How to Calculate Zakat — Four Steps
Check the Nisab Threshold
Nisab is the minimum wealth required before Zakat is obligatory. It equals 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver at current market rates. Use our Nisab Calculator to find today's value in your currency.
Total Your Zakatable Assets
Add the market value of gold, silver, cash, savings, business inventory, and receivables. Then subtract outstanding debts and liabilities to get your net zakatable wealth.
Complete One Lunar Year (Hawl)
Your net wealth must have been at or above Nisab for a full lunar year — approximately 354 days. The Zakat year starts from the date you first reached Nisab.
Pay 2.5% of Net Wealth
Zakat = 2.5% of your total net zakatable wealth. It may be paid in one lump sum or instalments. Distribute to any of the eight categories mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah 9:60.
What Is Zakat?
Zakat (زَكَاة) — meaning "purification" and "growth" — is the Third Pillar of Islam. It is an annual obligatory act of worship: every eligible Muslim must give 2.5% of their accumulated savings and wealth to those in need, provided the wealth has been held above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year.
The Quran mentions Zakat alongside Salah (prayer) in more than 30 verses, reflecting its central importance in Islamic practice. Paying Zakat purifies wealth spiritually, reduces inequality, and strengthens community bonds. The eight categories eligible to receive Zakat are defined in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60): the poor, the needy, Zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, those in debt, those striving in the cause of Allah, and stranded travellers.
"And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves — you will find it with Allah." — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:110

Per the Hanafi school: yes — Zakat is due on all gold above Nisab, including jewellery worn by women. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery used for personal adornment.
No. Your primary residence, personal vehicle, household furniture, and clothing are not zakatable assets — they are tools of daily life, not accumulated wealth. Rental property income may be zakatable.
Zakat is obligatory (fard) charity with fixed rules on amount, assets, and recipients. Sadaqah is voluntary charity that can be given in any amount at any time to anyone in need. Both are highly encouraged in Islam.
Yes. You may pay Zakat before the hawl is complete (early payment is valid) and in multiple instalments throughout the year. What matters is that the full 2.5% is paid on time each year.
Ushr (عشر) is Zakat on agricultural produce. The rate is 10% on rain-fed crops and 5% on irrigated crops. Unlike standard Zakat, Ushr is due at each harvest — not annually. Use our Ushr Calculator.
