Qurbani Share Rules 2026 — Everything You Need to Know
Qurbani is a beautiful act of worship. It reminds us of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). But to make your Qurbani valid, you need to follow the correct rules. This guide explains everything in plain, simple English — no jargon, no confusion.
What Is Qurbani?
Qurbani (also called Udhiyah) is an act of worship. You sacrifice a livestock animal during Eid al-Adha. This happens on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic calendar.
It honours the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son for Allah. Allah (SWT) replaced the sacrifice with an animal at the last moment. We remember that act every year.
Eid al-Adha 1447H is expected around June 2026. Exact dates depend on moon sighting in your country.
Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) for every adult Muslim who owns wealth above the Nisab threshold. This is the same threshold used for Zakat.

The Rule of Niyyah (Intention)
Niyyah means intention. For Qurbani, your Niyyah must be correct. Without it, the sacrifice is not valid.
What Is a Valid Niyyah?
- For Qurbani: You intend this sacrifice as an act of worship for Eid al-Adha
- For Sadaqah: You intend this as a voluntary act of charity
- On behalf of deceased: You intend this as a gift of reward (Sadaqah) for someone who has passed
If you perform Qurbani on behalf of a deceased person, all the meat must be given as Sadaqah to those in need. You and your family may not eat from it.
When you share a cow with 6 others, every one of those 7 people must have a valid intention. If even one person has a wrong or missing intention, it may affect the validity of all shares. Always confirm this with your group before booking.
How to Distribute Qurbani Meat
After the sacrifice, you divide the meat. Scholars recommend splitting it into three equal parts.
This 1/3rd rule is a recommendation, not a strict obligation in most schools. But it is a beautiful Sunnah practice. You may give more to the poor if you wish — in fact, that is encouraged.
Can You Freeze or Store the Meat?
Yes. Scholars of all major madhabs agree you may store your share of the meat. You can freeze it, cook it, or give it away later. There is no time limit on consuming your portion.
Qurbani for Your Family — Complete Guide
Many families ask: "Do we each need our own Qurbani, or does one animal cover the whole family?"
The Hanafi Position (Most common in Pakistan, UK, USA)
Qurbani is individually obligatory. Every adult Muslim in the household who owns wealth above Nisab must perform their own Qurbani. One goat does not cover a whole family.
How to Plan Qurbani for a Family
- Husband and wife both eligible? Each needs a minimum of 1 share.
- Adult children working? If they own wealth above Nisab, they need their own Qurbani too.
- Children under 18? Qurbani is not obligatory for them. You may do it voluntarily on their behalf.
- Elderly parents? You may perform Qurbani on their behalf with their permission.
A family of 4 eligible adults needs at least 4 shares total. One cow (7 shares) can cover 4 family members with 3 shares left for friends or neighbours. Use the calculator above to see the exact cost per share.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many shares are in a cow for Qurbani?
A cow has a maximum of 7 shares for Qurbani. Each share belongs to one person. You cannot go above 7. If you need 8 shares, you must book a second cow or buffalo.
Can husband and wife share one Qurbani goat?
No. A goat or sheep counts as only 1 share for 1 person. If both husband and wife are eligible for Qurbani, each needs their own sacrifice. They can each take a share in one cow instead.
Can I do Qurbani on behalf of a deceased parent?
Yes. You can perform Qurbani as Sadaqah on behalf of someone who has passed. All the meat from that share must be given to the poor. You and your family may not eat from it. Our calculator has a tick-box for this scenario with a full Fiqh note.

The rules for Qurbani goat in 2026 (1447H) are the same as every year. The goat must be at least 1 year old. It must be free from major defects (blind in one eye, lame, very sick, or missing a large part of an ear or tail). One goat provides only 1 share for 1 person.
When can I perform Qurbani in 2026?
Qurbani can be performed on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul Hijjah — the three days of Eid al-Adha. The 10th day is the first and best day. Qurbani is not valid before the Eid prayer on the 10th.
Is it OK to send Qurbani money to a charity?
Yes. Many Muslims in the UK and USA send money to reputable Islamic charities who perform Qurbani in Pakistan, Bangladesh, or other countries on their behalf. This is permitted. Make sure the charity uses the correct Islamic method of slaughter and follows the Qurbani share rules properly.
Does Qurbani count as Zakat?
No. Qurbani and Zakat are two separate acts of worship. You must fulfil both independently. Qurbani cannot be counted as part of your Zakat payment. Use our Zakat Calculator to calculate your Zakat separately.
